PASSIVE VOICE

ACTIVE AND PASSIVE SENTENCES.

In English sentences can be active or passive . If the sentence is active the subject of that sentence acts on something or someone: it performs the action expressed by the main verb. The subject acts.

My grand-father built this house in 1889.

Now if the sentence is a passive one, the subject of that sentence is acted upon: the subject receives the action expressed in the main verb. Form of Passive

Subject + finite form of to be + Past Participle (3rd column of irregular verbs)
Example: A letter was written.

When rewriting active sentences in passive voice, note the following:

The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence
The finite form of the verb is changed (to be + past participle)
The subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentence

This house was built by my grand-father.

If you want to point out who did an action or what caused it you have to use the preposition BY

ACTIVE: Betty cleans this room every day

PASSIVE: This room is cleaned every day by Betty

In English, we generally use the passive voice when it is not that important who or what caused the action.
Writers should prefer the use of the active voice rather than the passive one. Why is this? Because the active voice is considered to be a more powerful and straightforward form of expression. The active voice also uses less word to convey the same message

In passive voice sentences you can use many tenses. Yet, in this lesson we will begin with present simple and past simple tenses.

The structures are as follows:

Passive voice in the present simple: STRUCTURE: AM /IS /ARE + past participle of the verb Simple Present
Active: Rita writes a letter.
Passive: A letter is written by Rita

PASSIVE WITHOUT BY (SIMPLE PRESENT)

ACTIVE: The use the yen in Japan.
PASSIVE: The yen is used in Japan.

Passive voice in the past simple:

STRUCTURE: WAS /WERE + past participle of the verb
Simple Past

 Active: Rita wrote a letter.

Passive: A letter was written by Rita.

PASSIVE WITH BY (SIMPLE PAST)

The passive changes the focus of a sentence. For the simple past, use The PAST OF BE + PAST PARTICIPLE.

ACTIVE: Bartholdi designed the Statue of Liberty.

PASSIVE: The Statue of Liberty was designe by Barthodi

Personal Passive simply means that the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence. So every verb that needs an object (transitive verb) can form a personal passive.

Example: They build houses. – Houses are built.

Personal Passive simply means that the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence. So every verb that needs an object (transitive verb) can form a personal passive.

Example: They build houses. – Houses are built.

Verbs without an object (intransitive verb) normally cannot form a personal passive sentence (as there is no object that can become the subject of the passive sentence). If you want to use an intransitive verb in passive voice, you need an impersonal construction – therefore this passive is called Impersonal Passive.

Example: he says – it is said

We will continue with this topic in the coming lessons. Now to check if you undertood this introduction to the passive voice try to do the exercises below.

 Now it's time for activities!

Try to rewrite these sentences. The first sentence is in the active voice. You have to complete the second sentence.
  Scorer Right
They don't use this road any more. This road is not used any more. (Is / was /were not used)

Somebody stole my bag in the shop. My bag was stolen in the shop. (Is / are / was stolen)

The police arrested the three men last night. The three men were arrested by the police. (are /was /were arrested)

PODCAST.

Podcast

An RSS feed icon, commonly used to indicate the Web feed for a podcast
A podcast is a series of digital media files (either audio or video) that are released episodically and downloaded through web syndication. The mode of delivery is what differentiates podcasts from other ways of accessing media files over the Internet, such as simple download or streamed webcasts: special client software applications known as podcatchers (like iTunes, Zune, Juice, and Winamp) are used to automatically identify and download new files in the series when they are released by accessing a centrally-maintained web feed that lists all files associated with the series. New files can thus be downloaded automatically by the podcatcher and stored locally on the user's computer or other device for offline use, giving simpler access to episodic content.
Most dictionary definitions of a podcast fall into one of two camps as of September 2009. One set focuses on the "on-demand" nature of podcasts. Another set requires the automatic or syndication posting. There are problems with both definitions. The first is too open. Under such a definition, a paid music download could technically be a podcast. Most audiences would disagree. The second is very limiting, in comparison. It does not acknowledge manual downloads. Researchers at the Center for Journalism and Communication Research at the University of Texas at Austin are proposing a four-part definition of a podcast: A podcast is a digital audio or video file that is episodic; downloadable; program-driven, mainly with a host and/or theme; and convenient, usually via an automated feed with computer software.
Name
The term "Podcasting" was first mentioned by Ben Hammersley in The Guardian newspaper in a February 2004 article, along with other proposed names for the new medium.[2] It is a portmanteau of the words "Pod" - derived from iPod- and "broadcasting",[3]. To avoid a term similar to "iPod", some use the term Netcast instead of Podcast.
It has never been necessary, despite the source of the name, to use an iPod or any other form of portable media player to use podcasts; the content can be accessed using any computer capable of playing media files.[4] A backronym has been posited where podcast stands for "Personal On Demand broadCAST

Summer Trips

Sometimes the weather didn't allow me to do that much, became in are you don't knowif rains a lot during the afternoon in Mexico city. This was solf of disapponting because that was the any time. I had for wandering araund and learn something new about life in the big city. I really went to make a trip to Mexico city, because there are many things to buy, why?,because everything is cheaper than other cities in Mexico, unfortunalely there are so much crime in this big city, you must be verycarefully when you are in this place.

Beautiful Forever!

My friends think I'm crazy. My father says I'll never get a job now, and my mother is worried that I won't get married. Last month, I had a beautiful sun desing tattooed onto the top of my left arm. It's smallish, neat, and feminine. It won't get lost like jewelry or wear out like clothing. Even when I am old, I will still have my lovely sun although. I know some people think tattoos are unattractive, but I love the special look of my new symbol.

Learning Responsability.

My first job was as a sales clerk in a small clothing shop. It wasn't a difficult job, and it wasn't really a very interesting job. Every weekend I had to open the store at 10:00 a.m. I couldn't be late. I helped customers find clothes, and I kept the store neat and clean. My parent's house was very clean, too.I used the cash register and handled credit cards, so I had to be very careful. These things all taught me responsibility. I don't work with clothing anymore, but I still use that important skill I learned in my first job.
